Oral Cancer Screening and Awareness
Close to 50,000 Americans will be diagnosed with oral cancer this year. It will cause over 10,000 deaths, killing roughly 1 person per hour, 24 hours every day.
Of those 50,000 newly diagnosed individuals, only slightly more than half will be alive in 5 years. Often, oral cancer is only discovered when the cancer has metastasized to another location, most likely the lymph nodes of the neck. Prognosis at this stage of discovery is significantly worse than when it is caught in a localized intra-oral area. Early discovery and diagnosis saves lives.
When you come in for your cleaning the dentist will examine your tongue, throat and the soft tissues inside your mouth where oral cancer begins. You will also be provided with the latest information including life-style considerations that may help reduce your risk of developing oral cancer.
Also keep in mind that there are many other oral diseases and conditions that can affect the soft tissues inside your mouth that are not cancer and can be detected during a routine exam.
