Preventative Care & Oral Cancer Screening

PREVENTATIVE CARE AND ORAL CANCER SCREENING

Preventative Care

Prevention is the key to avoiding the many oral problems that can occur throughout one’s life. The American Dental Association recommends seeing your dentist at least twice a year for a comprehensive dental exam to identify existing, or potential problems. Dental conditions caught in the early stages can be managed easier and will be more inexpensive to correct than if left untreated for long periods of time. Often, dentists are able to identify potential problems before patients are aware of them. When you maintain regular preventative dental appointments, you will reduce and prevent decay and gum disease, respectively. A proper and thorough exam will reveal the beginnings of oral and possibly even systemic health conditions before they become severe. Along with your cleaning and exam you will receive personalized information about how to keep your mouth clean and healthy.

Oral Cancer Screening and Awareness

Close to 50,000 Americans will be diagnosed with oral cancer this year. It will cause over 10,000 deaths, killing roughly 1 person per hour, 24 hours every day.

Of those 50,000 newly diagnosed individuals, only slightly more than half will be alive in 5 years.  Often, oral cancer is only discovered when the cancer has metastasized to another location, most likely the lymph nodes of the neck. Prognosis at this stage of discovery is significantly worse than when it is caught in a localized intra-oral area. Early discovery and diagnosis saves lives.

When you come in for your cleaning the dentist will examine your tongue, throat and the soft tissues inside your mouth where oral cancer begins. You will also be provided with the latest information including life-style considerations that may help reduce your risk of developing oral cancer.

Also keep in mind that there are many other oral diseases and conditions that can affect the soft tissues inside your mouth that are not cancer and can be detected during a routine exam.
